Textile Short Courses

The Short Course programmes emphasizes the skills of fashion design, fashion sketching, promotion and presentation and also provides a strong technical background in pattern making and sewing. Senior fashion students design and present a final collection and professional portfolio in support of their individual career goals. Facilities and equipment reflect the current industry requirements as well as the most updated technologies to support learning and career preparation. Facilities included sewing studios equipped with the customized dress forms, cutting tables, industrial sewing machines, as well as drawing and lecture studios. The fashion department computers offers high-speed internet access to online subscription services and individual work station that support computer aided design softwares.

Introduction to fashion
This studio course addresses the basic element of fashion design the students learn how to drawn croquis and how to balance body weight. Also the assignments initiates the design process through trend research, color story, design innovation from 2-D to 3-D and development of creative ideas.

Introduction to Textile
This course is to introduce the students to color, design and repeat patterns. It also helps to understand the process of print design by teaching them background treatments and repeat patterns and placements.

Print Design
This project includes the advance level print design. The students are encouraged and exposed to market base product design through the series of assignments. Students are expected to explore and experiment with all the design possibilities related to the given product. This enables them to develop professional approach with creative mind.

Basic Illustration
This course introduces fashion drawing techniques to communicate the ideas, moods and details of garments by visually interpreting fashion apparel, including the body proportions used in basic fashion drawing. Drawing techniques integrate the use of croquis and the concept of flat specification. As students create various croquis bodies for individual port folios, they are expected to develop their own personal style and flat pattern drawing skills. The concept of sketching designs and actual garments in the flat format rather than on the fashion figure.

Machine Sewing
In this course student are introduced to professional standard of sewing techniques and to start off they are taught on paper and move on to fabric to get a better control over the industrial machines. It also introduces students to the fundamental hand and machine skills. The course includes construction processes, assembly procedures, selection of trimmings and notions, fabric cutting and fabrics.

Pattern Making
Students draft and execute professional standard patterns through rub off, measurements and flat pattern methods. This course addresses advanced pattern cutting techniques building on the knowledge gained in Pattern Drafting, the course culminates in the design and creation of garments. This course is highly recommended for undergraduate students preparing for their senior projects.

Basic Drawing
The students are taught to observe and make a proportionate drawing with correct tones and perspective. They start with the very basic exercise and come up to draw still life in medium such as pencil, crayon, and charcoal.

Virtual Design (Fashion or Textile)
Students acquire basic knowledge and hands-on experience with typically used by designers in fashion/textile industry. They develop their ability to create original designs in various. Using the computer as a design tool, students learn to conceptualize fashion/textile design ideas and create original artwork on the computer using Adobe illustrator. Students focus on sketching, color stories, line planning, silhouette, and fabric design in order to establish fashion/textile design principles through digital design development techniques. Analysis and interpretation of customer/category research is integrated. Students learn the fundamental and advanced techniques specific to fashion/illustrator design using Adobe Illustrator. Students also build fabric and trim libraries and create stitch effects and/or repeat prints.

Surface Embellishment
In this study of fabrics, students manipulate fabrics and textures to produce special decorative effects for detailing fashion apparel at all levels of the marketplace. Students expand their knowledge of the couture by learning various decorative techniques. They learn how to hand bead as well as apply, sequins, pearls, and faux gems on different types of fabrics. They create such embellishments as flowers and frog closures from fabric and ribbons, hand embroider original designs, and learn the art of quilting, pleating.
